Battlestar Galactica Introduction
This is one of those shows, that you will remember for decades to come, because of the depth in story and interesting characters. It's one of my favorite series on television, not merely, because of the numerous space battles, which are extremely intense with fast action and strategic brilliance, but because of the intelligent and intriguing story-line, that forces the heroes to make difficult choices and sacrifices in a perilous time. Choices are made, that call into question, what is morally right or wrong and what is necessary for the greater good, their very existence and quality of life.
The term "re-imagining" is widely used when talking about this masterpiece remake of Battlestar Galactica and it is an accurate, yet too general, way to describe the sweeping changes that have taken place. I won't bore you with all of the details, but most notably is the fact that, instead of a heroic fantasy theme, there is more realism this time around and the flaws of humanity are made quite apparent in every episode. Couple that with an epic struggle for the survival of the human race and you have one of the most memorable experiences in television history.
I would like to say, that when I first tried watching Battlestar Galactica, I felt there was too much drama and that it was slow moving, so much so, that I could not continue watching it. However, a few months later, I decided to give it another chance and I was so surprised at how amazing this show really is, that I could not even describe it! I was in awe! So, here's a word of advice, give it some time, once the character backgrounds are developed and the plot is set, you are in for one wild ride! Let me tell you, I was hooked for good!
Announcements:
I am extremely busy, overwhelmed with critical financial matters at this time and I am unable to submit a recapitulation for the first episode of the fourth season. I have had this website up for over a year and have only received one donation. It takes approximately 15 hours to do each recapitulation and I just do not have time to do the work when I am in such financial dire straights. If my financial situation changes, I will post an update. Cheers!
Notes:
You'll notice the navigation column on the left, has both blue and red colored links. Please, be advised that the blue colored links denote completed episode recaps and the red colored links, are only briefly summarized. I plan to complete one episode a week, approximately, until I get caught up. So, without further ado, I'll start you off with Battlestar Galactica, character background information.
Commander William Adama
Commander Adama is a hero, not in the sense that he has risked his life above and beyond the call of duty, which he has, but in the fact that humanity would not have survived without him. The devastating attack on their home world, would surely have wiped them all out, if it was not for the experience and wisdom he gained from the first Cylon war. He is a brilliant, courageous leader, that cannot be intimidated, but because of his exceptionally good judgment, he can admit when he is wrong. The commander's deep, raspy voice, movements, and facial expressions tell you that this man carries the weight of the world on his shoulders, yet he hides it very well with gallantry and intrepidity.
Honor and duty dominates his personality, and while the commander of the Battlestar Galactica is very cautious and down to earth when making decisions that affect his crew and the civilians under his protection, he is willing to take risks, in order to insure their survival. Additionally, he cares a great deal for his subordinates, so much so, that he considers them part of his own family. Although, he is skeptical when dealing with religious philosophy, he is at least, open to the possibility that there is some truth and wisdom that can be gained from it's consideration.
President Laura Roslin
Laura Roslin, is the former Secretary of Education for the Twelve Colonies and even though she is 43rd in line of succession, after the attack, she is the only surviving member of that government. With reservation, she assumes the presidency and accepts the responsibility of leading the fleet of civilians and military to a new home on the 13th colony, Earth.
Her personality, is that of confidence and great intelligence, however, she shows little common sense when it comes to military maneuvers. With her thoughtfulness and objectivity, she agrees that Adama lead the military, while she retain authority over the fleet's personnel and the civilians' welfare.
Captain Lee "Apollo" Adama
Apollo, Galactica's CAG, or Commander of the Air Group, is one of the most experienced and best viper pilots in the military. He is both distinguished and duty bound, who holds a strict moral and lawful code that dominates his every action. Initially, he and his father are in conflict, because Lee believes that his father is responsible for his brother Zak's, death. Eventually, through mutual struggle and success, they bond over their shared experience, allowing Lee to discover that his father had nothing to do with this tragedy.
Lieutenant Kara "Starbuck" Thrace
Starbuck is sort of a cliche, in that she is a gambling, cigar smoking, party animal, who loves to participate in a rousing game of cards, with her peers. She is a nonconformist, in the true sense of the word, because she, repeatedly rejects the standards, rules, and laws, of the Galactica chain of command and is constantly thrown in the brig for her disobedience. Add to that, the fact that she is quite promiscuous, regardless of her relationship status, one might consider her a lost cause.
However, understanding the reason for her behavior, a result of being abused as a child and the crippling, self inflicted, guilt of surviving the genocide of her people, does grant her, sizeable leeway. Nonetheless and even more importantly, she does offer a tremendous redeeming quality, in that she is an amazingly gifted pilot and has saved the fleet on more than one occasion. Her unique ability, as a fighter pilot, is compounded by, her absolute brilliance in strategic warfare. Considering her enormous contribution to the survival of humanity, many of her rebellious actions are overlooked. Continue to Page 2 ...
