Battlestar Galactica Season One, Episode "Bastille Day", Page 1

Onboard the Battlestar Galactica, the camera zooms in on Colonel Tigh, still asleep on his bunk, when someone on the loudspeaker announces, "Reveille, Reveille! Morning stations onboard the Battlestar Galactica. All hands report to your morning stations!" The colonel mumbles to himself, then rolls out of bed. The first thing he does is go over to his locker to grab his stash of whiskey and have a drink. He quickly pours a shot of whiskey, as if it was the only thing that sustains his life, then slams it down. He pours another half-shot, breathes it in, and savors it fully, which seems to calm his nerves enough to start the day.

New Scene:
Still onboard the Battlestar Galactica, Colonel Tigh enters the briefing room, in a cheerful mood, and says, "So? What do we have?" Chief Tyrol salutes him and replies, "Good morning, Colonel. Good news! We scouted the ice moon ...we found an entire subsurface ocean and recorded some video for you, sir. The colonel leans over to take a look, then says, "Not exactly Caprica Beach down there, huh chief?" Chief Tyrol replies, "No, sir. We've registered temperatures 180 and below ...Venting of Methane and Co2 ...it's going to be a bitch to work down there, sir." Colonel Tigh replies, "Cheer up. You know how lucky we are that we found this ugly rock? Water riots are breaking out all over the fleet."

The colonel continues to examine the data and says, "Civilians ...whiney civey cry babies always needing a hot shower, every day." The chief replies, "Yes, sir." Then, the camera pans around the room to show Cally, Tyrol, and another shipmate sharing a silent giggle at the colonel's inebriated condition. The colonel continues with, "Even Galactica is down to 10 thousand JPs of water." He turns to Tyrol and says, "Ever see a man die of dehydration, chief?", to which he replies, "No, sir ..." The colonel replies, "Well, let's hope you never do. It isn't pretty."

Colonel Tigh, realizes that he went off on a tangent and says, "So? Where were we?", to which Cally replies, "We drilled 23 core samples." and hands him a data sheet. Colonel Tigh takes the document and yells, "Thirteen percent Sodium Chloride? What the hell!? We can't drink salt water!" Chief Tyrol replies, "No, sir. That's why I had Cally test the ...ice." and points at the document, signaling that the colonel should read it more thoroughly. Colonel Tigh sees the entry on the document and replies, "Ohhh ...There you go, pure water. A couple of lemons and we could make lemonade." and chuckles out loud. The camera pans around to show everyone having another silent giggle at the colonel's condition and behavior. Chief Tyrol replies with, "Yes, sir ...We will have to melt the ice, before we can transport it up to the ship." Colonel Tigh asks, "What's that going to take?" One of Tyrol's crewman replies, "High Capacity Heater Expansion Tanks, D-25 Plasma Torches, Myrex Hoses, Centrifugal Pumps ..." Colonel Tigh interrupts, "Sounds like a lot of man power.", to which Chief Tyrol replies, "Ideally, a thousand men, sir." Colonel Tigh questions, "A thousand men? And where are they going to come from?"

New Scene:
Still onboard the Battlestar Galactica, the president and her aide are in Commander Adama's office, discussing the situation, when she questions in disbelief, "Slave Labor!?" Commander Adama replies with, "They are criminals and they have been sentenced to hard labor ...and this is very hard labor. Not to mention, physically dangerous. This is not for civilians, but ..." Apollo interrupts him with, "Their ship wasn't designed for long term incarceration. These men have been stuck in cramped cells for weeks, now. They might even prefer, to get out ...do something, even if it is dangerous." The president replies with, "If they volunteer, but these men are not slaves and I will not have them treated, as such." Apollo replies, "No ...We could offer incentives ...points, towards earning freedom."

Commander Adama interrupts, "Excuse me? You want to start releasing hardened criminals, into the fleet!?" Apollo replies, "Sir? These men were on their way to Caprica for Parole Hearings, which at least implies, that they may be ready for release." Commander Adama scoffs at the idea, but the president agrees with him and says, "Make it happen, captain." Apollo replies, "Yes, sir." and the president continues, "Billy? To address Commander Adama's concerns, I 'ld like you to go along, to set up some sort of screening procedure to weed out the hardened criminals." Billy replies with, "Yes, ma'am." Then, Commander Adama says, "I would like to have a representative from Galactica, who will report directly to me, about security issues." Billy speaks up, "How about Dee? ...uhh, Second Class Petty Officer Dualla ..." Commander Adama replies with, "I know who she is." Billy continues, "I'm sure she is versed with the technical details and ..." Commander Adama interrupts, "She'll be fine, but I think we should send someone from ground crew. We'll make sure all the men that are chosen, know how to handle the equipment." President Roslin agrees and the commander ends with, "That's all, I have to get to the CIC, excuse me." and begins to leave the room.

Billy turns to the president and says, "Uh ...Madam President?" and whispers in her ear, "The doctor? The doctor?", to which she replies, with, "Ohhh..." and stops Commander Adama from leaving the room with, "Commander? Do you have a ship's doctor, aboard Galactica?", to which the commander replies, "Major Cottle ...Is there something wrong?" The president replies with, "No, nothing urgent ...allergies." Commander Adama replies with, "Yes, well ...he's out on the fleet, checking medical conditions ...I'll tell him that you want to see him."

New Scene:
Still onboard the Battlestar Galactica, the president and Billy are leaving the commander's quarters, when she teases him with, "Petty Officer Dualla ...Versed in technical details..." with a smile on her face. Billy replies with, "I'm thinking, entirely of the mission." The president rolls her eyes with amusement and says, "Uh huh ..."

The camera switches over to show, the commander and Apollo walking toward the CIC, when he asks his son, "Something on your mind, captain?", to which Apollo replies, "I just thought, maybe you had something you wanted to say." Commander Adama replies with, "I have nothing to say to the personal representative of the president." Apollo replies with, "I'm still Galactica's lead pilot ..." and the commander replies with, "Well, I have nothing to say to him, either." They both pause in the hallway and the commander continues, "Every man has to decide for themselves, which side they're on." Apollo replies, "I didn't know we were picking sides." and walks away. The commander pauses for a moment, then says to himself, "That's why you haven't picked one, yet."
