Battlestar Galactica Season Three, Episode "A Day In The Life", Page 4
When they arrive, the admiral yells, "Chief!?", to which Chief Tyrol replies, "Admiral? I seem to have turned this into a full blown fubar." As the two are beginning to freeze, due to the unbearable cold of deep space, the chief says, "You would be doing us a hell of a favor, if you could get those doors open." Admiral Adama, turns to Apollo and with great urgency, says "We gotta get them out of there." He then orders Chief Tyrol and Cally, "Keep moving! Keep moving!", so that the heat generated will help keep them alive. The camera zooms in, to show the hole is a great deal larger, now, and we hear the air venting into space, at an alarming rate.
New Scene:
Still onboard the Battlestar Galactica, Admiral Adama, Colonel Tigh, and Apollo are looking at a schematic of the ship, in search of a way, to rescue Galen and Cally, from certain doom. Apollo, urgently, advises, "The airlock is designed to lock down, if the pressure decreases, unexpectedly. So, as soon as the patch gave way....", but the admiral interrupts with, "I know the system! We have redundancies! We have backups!" Apollo continues with, "The manual override, is down. There is no way, of getting those inner doors to open! The thing must have taken heavy damage, on the way out of New Caprica." Colonel Tigh says, "The whole ship has taken a pounding. We need six weeks in dry dock, just to hammer out the dings, let alone structural damage." Admiral Adama asks, "How much time, do they have?", to which Apollo replies, "A leak that size? They'll be out of air, in half an hour, maybe less. Those are blast doors. It will take, at least an hour, to cut through them." Colonel Tigh asks, "Why don't we put explosives in the observation booth, blow the glass, and pull them out?" Apollo replies, "No. That glass is strong enough to withstand a Tylium explosion. Anything, strong enough to take out the glass, will take out Tyrol and Cally, at the same time." Admiral Adama shows anger, after hearing the low probability of a successful rescue and says, "I need a rescue plan! Not excuses!"
New Scene:
Still onboard the Battlestar Galactica, down in the hangar bay, Apollo, Starbuck, and Athena are testing a theory for a rescue attempt, when we see the side door of a Raptor slowly closing. Apollo, who has been monitoring his stop watch, says, "Seven seconds.", to which Starbuck replies, "And another 10 to re-pressurize, since we will be doing this, in open space. That's pushing it." Athena says, "This might be a stupid question, but has anyone ever tried a rescue, like this before?" Starbuck replies, "No one's ever been crazy enough." Apollo turns to Athena and gives the order, "It doesn't matter, we're out of time. Prep for launch.", then he turns to the crew that are preparing the ship and yells, "We've only got 18 minutes, left!" Athena tells the crew, "Alright, let's go! We're on!"
New Scene:
Still onboard the Battlestar Galactica, Chief Tyrol is seen taking some air masks from a container and gives one of them to Cally. They are both moving very slowly, due to the extreme cold and the affect it has had on their bodies. Cally calls the chief over, to show him that the hole has grown even bigger and we hear the admiral say, "The airlock is still jammed. Overrides are not responding." The chief says to his wife, "I guess, we're kind of running out of options." Admiral Adama continues, "I'm going to take you out through the front door." Airlock 12, is so cold by now, that the chief can barely speak, when he looks at the admiral and says, "You'll ...put a ship out there ...and rig up some kind of docking collar?" The admiral replies, "You'll be out of air, in a few minutes. There's no time, for a collar." Cally says, "But, sir? If you're talking about an EVA, we don't have pressure suits." Admiral Adama, knowing full well, the grave situation at hand, replies, "We don't have a choice. Athena, is going to position her Raptor in front of the airlock ...hatch open. We'll blow the bolts right off of that door and when it opens up, you're going to have to jump for it. Now, listen to me, both of you. You can do this. People, have been able to live up to a minute in exposure, without a suit." Chief Tyrol, is skeptical and struggles against the bitter cold to say, "Admiral, I don't know." The admiral orders, "We'll talk, later. Get ready!"
The scene, briefly switches over, to show Athena launching her raptor and we hear the communication, "Athena? Galactica. You have priority clearance. All other traffic has been waved away."
The scene switches back to the airlock, where Cally and the chief are moving some boxes and gear closer to the door, so that when it blows, they will not be hit by any debris. Cally says, "Wait. What about Nicky?", to which the chief replies, "The admiral's right. I have to prep. I'll move everything away ...from here ...to the door." Cally replies, "We both know what happens to kids in the fleet, when their parents aren't there for them." The chief replies with, "Apollo and Dee. They'll take care of him.", but Cally is worried about her son and replies, "No. No pilots. He's not going through this, twice." Determined to protect her baby, she walks over to the control room and pleads with the admiral, "Sir? There's a civilian family, the mother's name is Susan Decklar ...she has a little girl ..." She starts to cry and ends with, "if anything happens to us ..." The admiral, replies with great concern, "I'll see to it." The chief, realizes how profound of a request his wife just made and puts his hand on her shoulder, then pulls her to a comforting embrace. While holding his wife, he can barely get the shivering words out, "I was being ...selfish. I wanted you ...with me. With me, all the time. I didn't think about ...Nick. I'm sorry." Cally manages to stop crying, then tries to assure the chief with, "The admiral, is going to get us out of here, ok? And then, you're going to take care of Nicky"
The camera pans over to the control room, where Colonel Tigh is informing the admiral, "More than a few seconds out there, and we're talking severe exposure, decompression sickness, at the very least, hypothermia. They could freeze to death." With that information, the admiral replies, "Make sure, Cottle has got his Hyperbaric Chamber, ready."
The camera pans back, to show the two in huddle, trying to stay warm and struggling to breath. You can see tears forming in both their eyes, because all they can think about is their child's welfare, even though they are freezing to death, in the bone crushing cold, of deep space.
The scene, briefly, switches outside, to show Athena maneuvering her Raptor into position and Apollo radios, "Galactica? Apollo. Bringing Raptor into position, at Z-Block Twelve."
Apollo orders everyone onboard the Raptor, "Alright, listen up. We don't have time to hang back until the airlock blows, so we're liable to experience some turbulence from the residual oxygen, maybe even some shrapnel hits." Apollo turns to Athena and says, "Athena? You're going to have to be ready, to compensate." and she replies with, "I'm on it, major. We'll hold position, until the chief and Cally are secured. Let's just get this done."
