Battlestar Galactica Season Three, Episode "Dirty Hands", Page 5
The doctor continues, "So, what do you make of it?" The chief replies with, "I think it's a pile of crap." Dr. Baltar then says, "Obviously, my analysis scares you. But, everything in my book happens to be true." The chief replies, "So, it's true ...it's true that you're a farm boy from Aerelon?" The doctor replies, "Yes, it is ...as a matter of fact. I was born and raised on a dairy outside the town of Cuttlesbreath Wash, on Aerelon." The chief gives a skeptical reply, "Why do I have such a hard time, picturing you milking cows and shoveling manure?" Dr. Baltar replies, "Lack of imagination." The chief smiles with his reply, "Or maybe, that your little tale is manure. I've known people from Aerelon. You don't sound anything like them."
Dr. Baltar asks, "I don't sound like I'm from Aerelon?" and the chief replies, "No." Then the doctor replies with, "Well, you know I take that as a particular compliment. I don't know about you, but I have always found the Aerelon dialect, to be particularly hard on the ears. Something about the consonants that scrape the back of the throat.", as he uses a perfect Aerelon accent to prove his point. Then, he continues with the accent, "Of course, I should know a lot about my native accent. I spent hours trying to overcome it. Do you have any idea how hard it is, for a ten year old boy to change the way he speaks? To unlearn everything he ever learned. So, that one day ...one day, there might be a small hope ...that he might be considered as NOT coming from Aerelon. Maybe, I don't know ...Caprica? ...Caprica, oh to be Caprican. A seat at politics, culture, art, science ...learning! And what was Aerelon? Just a drab, ugly rock ...condemned to be a food basket for the twelve worlds. And that's how we were treated like. So much like laborers, like working class. You know, you would have fit right in there, chief. Lots of men who like to work with their hands and uh ...grab a pint down at the pub and finish off the evening with a good old fashioned fight. Oh, yes. I left Aerelon, after my eighteenth birthday. I turned my back on my family ...and my heritage. All of them. Of course, it doesn't matter, though ...they're all dead, now." The chief was listening careful and he replies with a much more understanding tone, "You do realize, that none of that exist here." The doctor laughs and says, "Coming from the mouth of a mechanic?" The chief replies, "We've kept democracy. We have government, we have rights, we have elections ..." Dr. Baltar yells his interruption, "Well, you should be perfectly happy, shouldn't you? Perfectly, at ease. Go home! Leave me in peace! After all, that's what the aristocracy wants. It wants the working class to feel looked after, while they scrabble around for scraps from the master's table."
The camera pans over to the chief and you can see that the doctor has pushed some sensitive buttons. No matter what kind of man Dr. Baltar is, he speaks with great wisdom and the truth of his words, ring loud in anyone's ears that will listen. As the chief turns to leave, Dr. Baltar says, "There's a question that I ask at the end of my book. I'll save you the trouble of reading it. Do you honestly believe, that the fleet will let it be commanded by someone who's last name is NOT Adama?" Just then there is a knock on the outside door and the doctor says, "There it is, chief. One set of rules for the aristocracy and one set of rules for the rest of us."
New Scene:
Back onboard the refinery ship, we see that progress has increased many fold and the raw Tylium pile has grown to an enormous size, comparatively. Surprisingly, we see the entire crew working very hard and even more surprising, they are working as team. The process seems to be going very smoothly and productivity is proceeding at an impressive rate.
Kevin is giving the chief another tour and says, "We've given assignments to all the new workers from the lottery." Chief Tyrol replies, "Looks like you put them right to work." Kevin is optimistic with his reply, "Yeah, yeah. They're ok. They're a little skidish, but they'll catch on. Right up here, is where we had the problem, last time. We had all kinds of gear slippage ...temperature variations. We didn't know that the draws weren't getting burned off." The chief points and asks, "And that's the bad fuel?" Kevin replies, "Yeah, it's running right now. We got half a dozen places on the line that could crack ..."
Suddenly, the conveyor belt skips off the rails and the chief yells, "What's that!?" The conveyor skips again and the chief yells, "Oh, no! That's it. Hit the switch" as his signals to shut it down. Then, Kevin yells, "No, no, no! Now, it's jammed. The whole system will seize up! We gotta find it, otherwise the chambers will super heat and blows us all to hell! Hurry! We gotta get this going!" The chief found the problem and yells, "Right here! This is it!" Kevin yells, "Got it? Get it out of there!" and the chief attempts to pull the obstruction out of the way. Kevin says, "Come on, just give it a yank." and the chief replies, "I can't get it, hold on!" Kevin yells, "Careful, Careful!" The chief yells, "It's too small, I can't get under it!" The camera pans over, to show Seelix is working in the refinery now, then we hear someone behind her yell, "We got some hot rocks up there. You gotta get this thing started ...FAST!!!" Kevin yells, "Give it a yank, give it a yank!" and the chief replies, "I just can't get my hand around it!", as the camera zooms in, to show the chief's difficulty pulling the obstruction out.
Just then, we see Danny rush forward and yell, "I can try! I can probably fit!" The chief yells, "Come on, Danny!", then Kevin yells, "If it clears, the belt is going to jump, so you gotta be careful!" Danny crawls under the conveyor and is easily able to grab the obstruction. He starts working it back and forth and Kevin yells, "You gotta be careful! That's it, grab it! Pull it! Pull it!" The camera shows Danny jerking the obstruction back and forth with every ounce of energy he has, then someone yells, "Pull harder! Pull harder! There it is!" and the obstruction finally comes loose. Chief Tyrol yells, "Good work, Danny! Good work!" Kevin yells, "That a boy, Danny! Come on out! Come on out!" Suddenly, the conveyor belt falls and the machine smashes Danny's hand, which completely severs it from his body. He screams in agony, while Kevin yells for help, "Medic! Medic!" The camera quickly zooms down on Danny, to show that he is severely bleeding and going into shock. Meanwhile, Chief Tyrol looks around the room in shame, because he can't believe a child has to work in such a dangerous place. Seelix is seen tending to the boys wound and says, "We need more gauze." The boy is thrashing around and she says, "Just calm down." and then asks, "Give me some more.", as she tries to stop the boy from bleeding to death.
The camera pans over to see the chief leaving the area, with a very troubled, yet determined, look on his face. As he reaches the ladder, it looks as though he is going to climb, but he pauses for a moment, looks toward the accident, then turns back to make an unexpected decision. With confidence that he is doing the right thing, he reaches down to pull the levers, which brings the whole operation comes to a screeching halt! He takes one step up the ladder, so that he yell an important announcement, "This plant's offline!!! We're on strike!!!" The camera pans around the room to show the entire crew screaming a thundering cheer!
