Battlestar Galactica Season Three, Episode "Dirty Hands", Page 6
New Scene:
Back onboard the Battlestar Galactica, we see Starbuck and two other pilots moving along the upper walkway in the hangar bay and when they stop to look down, they see a group of mechanics sitting around playing cards. The pilots continue along the walkway to the stairs and by the time they reach the deck, the mechanics get to their feet. Starbuck is furious, when she approaches the crew and one of them says, "You need something, captain?", to which Starbuck replies, "Yeah, I Fracken need something! I need my Viper!" One of the mechanics says, "Sorry, captain. Vital missions, only. CAP's, already up. We did our job." One of the other pilots, yells with arrogance, "What do you mean, vital missions, only?" The mechanic replies, "Cally relayed the orders, from Chief Tyrol. We're on strike."
New Scene:
Still onboard the Battlestar Galactica, the scene starts off showing Chief Tyrol, being escorted by two armed marines, to the Galactica brig. Then we see Admiral Adama enter the room, which causes the chief to get to his feet and stand at attention, after which, he acknowledges the presence of a superior officer by saying, "Admiral."
Admiral Adama begins with the question, "Are you aware, that your deck gang is participating in a work stoppage?" The chief replies with, "It's called a general strike, sir." Admiral Adama replies with the grave warning, "It's mutiny ...and do you know what we do with mutineers? We shoot them, chief."
Chief Tyrol tries to persuade the admiral with, "We're leaving people behind, admiral. People are locked into their jobs, they have no control over their lives, they have no say. We're abandoning them to their fate, as if we marooned them on a planet." Admiral Adama replies with, "That is not the issue. The men and women on this ship, are not allowed to disobey an order ...Especially, in support of some kind of Fracken labor dispute." Chief Tyrol replies, "We launched the CAP. No one has abandoned their post. We're not putting anyone in danger." The admiral repeats his earlier words, "This is mutiny ...and it stops, now.", then turns toward the phone, but Tyrol stops him with, "Admiral? All I want, is to sit down with the president."
Admiral Adama gets on the phone and says, "This is the admiral. Arrest Cally Tyrol. Take her under armed guard, directly to the starboard repair bay." As he hangs up, a worried chief asks, "Repair bay? What are you doing?" Admiral Adama replies, "I'm going to put her up against the bulk head and I'm going to shoot her, as a mutineer." Chief Tyrol yells, "Are you out of your Fracken mind!? Cally was just following my orders." The admiral replies, "She's a ring leader, so she goes first ...Then, the rest of your deck gang. Fagurskey, Seelix, Pollucks." The chief is shocked and replies with, "You won't do this. We have a son." Admiral Adama replies, "Understand me. The very survival of this ship, may depend on someone getting an order, that they don't want to do ...and if they hesitate, if they feel the orders are some times, optional ...Then this ship, will parish ...and so will your son ...and the entire human race ...I don't want to do this, chief ...but, I will put ten Callys up against the wall to make sure that this ship and this fleet are not destroyed."
Chief Tyrol, shows a controlled rage with his reply, "Fine. I'll call it off." With those words, the admiral picks up the phone and angrily says, "This is the admiral. Is Cally in custody? Put her on." He turns to the guard and orders, "Open the door." When the marine opens the door, the chief walks over to the phone and asks his wife, "You ok?" Cally replies with, "Don't worry about me. I've been in the brig, before." The chief continues, "Everything is ok. Call off the strike." Cally asks, "Did they cave?" and the chief lies, "Yeah. Call it off." Cally replies with, "I knew it ...I'll take care of it. ...Galen? I'm proud of you." The chief tells her to give the phone to the marine, then hands his to the admiral. Admiral Adama orders the marine, "Release her." and hangs up the phone. He turns to the chief and says, "You can go now, chief." and after a brief pause he continues, "I thought that you had something that you wanted to discuss with the president."
New Scene:
Aboard the colonial one, the president asks the chief, "Would you like another drink?" and he replies, "Uh ...I think I've had enough. ...Madam President? I've seen people drafted into service, based purely on where they were born." The president replies with, "They've also, been selected based on their skills." Chief Tyrol argues, "Which is a result, of where they were born. Capricans are more likely to be professionals ...Aerelons are more likely to be farmers. It's just a fact of life."
The president replies, "It's a fact, I can't change.", to which he agrees, "True, but I think we can level the playing field. There are a lot of dirty jobs, that need to be done every day in this fleet ...cleaning, hauling, low level maintenance ...things like that. These are the kind of jobs, that I think should be allocated to people ..." He pauses for a moment and smiles, before continuing, "Well, people like yourself. No offense." The president returns the smile and says, "None taken. Go ahead." and the chief continues with, "Let some of the people on the Colonial One, get their hands dirty for a change."
The president, surprisingly agrees, with the chief's request, "Done. What else?" Chief Tyrol continues with, "People that are in dangerous and high stress jobs, need to be rotated out for R&R ...and in order to do that, we need a formal training program." The president interrupts with, "We can talk about a training program later, but right now we need to focus on maintaining the work force that we have and this is going to have to be an area, where the union gives ground." Surprised by her words, the chief asks, "The union?" The president replies with, "Oh, I'm sorry. I thought you were engaged collective bargaining on behalf of the Colonial Workers Alliance. If that's not the case, then ..." Chief Tyrol, smiles and interrupts her with, "Madam President, that union died on New Caprica." The president tries to encourage him with, "Chief? The workers in this fleet ...they need someone to represent them and their interests ...and if this society is becoming truly polarized between an entrenched political class and a disenfranchised underclass, we are doomed. We won't need the Cylons to destroy us, we'll destroy ourselves. The fleet that arrives at Earth, will not represent Colonial Society, at all. I am willing to fight for that society, until my dying breath! I would love it if you would fight for that society, as well." Chief Tyrol smiles, again, as he nods in agreement and says, "I will ...I will, Madam President, I will."
